In Hebrew-language texts, the term lilith or lilit translates as "night creatures", "night monster", "night hag", or "screech owlโ.
According to Jewish folklore, Lilith is said to be Adam's first wife and one of the very first she-demons to exist. Lilith was made to partner Adam and was was also created at the same time and from the same clay as Adam. Adam became commanding toward Lilith and she was not one to be dominated.
Insolently refusing to be subservient to her husband, Lilith left Adam and the perfection of the Garden of Eden; three angels tried in vain to force her return. According to some mythologies, her demonic offspring were sired by an archangel named Samuel and were not Adamโs progeny. Those children are sometimes identified as incubi and succubi.
Lilith symbol has allowed different groups to use her as a destructive female symbol or a symbol of female power. Many feminists see Lilith as not only the first woman but the first independent woman created. In the creation story she refuses to allow Adam to dominate her and flees the garden despite the consequences. Although Lilith is controversial some feminists have used her as a symbol of empowerment.
